Gilgit-Baltistan’s inclusion in CNN’s list of top 25 travel destinations for 2025 marks a proud achievement for Pakistan. Known for its stunning natural beauty—home to towering eight-thousanders, glaciers, lush meadows, and crystal-clear lakes—Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) has long captivated adventure enthusiasts worldwide. CNN’s endorsement highlights the region’s potential to rival the world’s top travel destinations. This recognition coincides with a steady rise in tourism, with the number of foreign adventurers growing from 2,100 in 2023 to 2,380 in 2024, offering Pakistan a golden opportunity to position itself as a premier eco-tourism hub.

However, to fully capitalize on this achievement, Pakistan must tackle long-standing challenges that hinder GB’s tourism potential. Accessibility remains one of the most pressing issues. Unreliable flight schedules and seasonally blocked roads often deter prospective visitors. To remedy this, the government must invest in reliable air travel, enhanced road infrastructure, and alternative routes to make the region more accessible. Additionally, boosting digital connectivity will improve the visitor experience and support local businesses.

Furthermore, simplifying permit processes and developing an efficient booking system would streamline the travel experience for tourists. At the same time, sustainable tourism practices must be prioritized to protect GB’s pristine environment, a key asset for the region. The government should implement stricter environmental policies and promote eco-friendly tourism practices while educating tourists on minimizing their ecological impact.

Learning from Nepal’s structured tourism model could provide valuable insights for GB. In Nepal, guided tours are mandatory in certain areas, ensuring both safety for visitors and local employment opportunities. Pakistan can also introduce community-based tourism initiatives to empower GB’s residents and ensure they benefit from the growth of the tourism industry.

With a focused approach to sustainable development, infrastructure improvement, and community involvement, Gilgit-Baltistan can truly thrive as a premier destination for eco-tourism and adventure travel.
