Keir Starmer Welcomes Zelensky to Downing Street Amid Tensions with Trump

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer warmly welcomed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to Downing Street on Saturday, just a day after Zelensky’s heated clash with US President Donald Trump. Starmer emphasized the UK’s unwavering support for Ukraine, saying, “You have full backing across the United Kingdom, and we stand with you for as long as it may take.”

During their meeting, Starmer and Zelensky discussed the importance of achieving lasting peace for Ukraine, one that ensures both sovereignty and security—goals that are crucial for both Europe and the United Kingdom. Zelensky thanked the UK for its consistent support, acknowledging the hundreds of supporters gathered outside Downing Street.

Earlier in the week, following a tense exchange in the White House, European leaders rallied behind Zelensky after Trump accused him of not being “ready” for peace with Russia. The incident, which saw Zelensky leave without signing an expected mineral deal, raised alarms across Europe. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk reassured Zelensky that Ukraine was “not alone,” while other European leaders, including Starmer, expressed “unwavering support” for Ukraine.

The situation escalated when Trump’s controversial comments about Ukraine’s role in the war and his shift toward seeking a deal with Russian President Vladimir Putin rattled the transatlantic alliance. Zelensky, visibly uncomfortable during the Oval Office confrontation, stood his ground, asserting there should be “no compromises with a killer on our territory.”

Despite the fallout, Zelensky remained diplomatic, stating he was open to future cooperation with Trump but wished the exchange had not occurred in front of the media. Meanwhile, European leaders, including EU chiefs Ursula von der Leyen and Antonio Costa, emphasized their commitment to Ukraine, with Germany’s Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock condemning Trump’s actions as a “new age of infamy.”

Global support for Ukraine remained strong, with countries like Canada, Australia, and New Zealand affirming their dedication to Kyiv’s cause. In the UK, the government also pledged £2.26 billion in military loans to strengthen Ukraine’s defense efforts.

As Ukraine continues its fight for sovereignty, the international community’s backing remains crucial in ensuring a just and lasting peace.
