A tragic incident off the coast of Western Sahara highlights the urgent need for a new approach to tackling the migrant crisis. A boat, which set sail from Mauritania earlier this month and was headed for the Spanish Canary Islands, remained adrift for nearly two weeks. Most of the passengers, primarily from Pakistan, perished, with at least 44 lives lost. This is the second such disaster following a deadly vessel capsizing off the Greek coast last month, which also claimed the lives of many Pakistanis. A previous shipwreck in the Mediterranean in 2023 killed 262 Pakistanis, underscoring the deadly peril faced by migrants.
Despite the Pakistani government’s efforts to crack down on human smugglers after these incidents, a more comprehensive, sustained approach is essential. While tackling the illegal trafficking networks is necessary, addressing the root causes of illegal migration is crucial for long-term solutions. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) reports that economic hardships and political instability in Pakistan have led to a sharp increase in migration, particularly from central Punjab, where many young men between the ages of 25 and 34 are seeking a better life in Europe.

Most migrants take perilous routes through Libya and Egypt, risking their lives on overcrowded, unseaworthy vessels, only to face tragic ends in the Mediterranean or Atlantic, or to suffer abuse at the hands of smugglers. Dismantling the widespread human trafficking networks is an enormous challenge, but it’s one that Pakistan must confront, ensuring that those responsible face the full force of the law.
The IOM emphasizes the need for awareness campaigns, particularly targeting tech-savvy youth in migration hotspots. However, such efforts will only be effective if the government takes meaningful steps to address the root causes, including creating jobs and economic opportunities. Until young Pakistanis are convinced that they have a future at home, they will continue to risk their lives in search of a dream abroad.
