Pakistan Walks the Tightrope Between Washington and Tehran

[post-views]

Editorial

Pakistan has stepped into one of the most volatile diplomatic corridors in the world. As United States and Iran negotiations over ending their war remain largely deadlocked, Islamabad has positioned itself as a mediating force, working to keep communication channels open and move talks forward before the window closes entirely.

Army Chief Asim Munir was set to travel to Tehran as part of this mediation push, following Pakistan’s interior minister who had already arrived in the Iranian capital. The message from Islamabad was direct: communication needs to move faster, and the various power centres within Iran need to align their positions before American patience runs out entirely.

That patience is visibly thinning. President Donald Trump has made clear that he wants answers, and quickly. He has spoken openly about returning to military action if the right terms are not received, warning that things could move very quickly in a direction Iran would not welcome. His domestic situation adds pressure. Fuel prices have risen sharply since the war disrupted global energy flows, and his approval ratings have dropped as a consequence, with midterm elections approaching.

The Strait of Hormuz sits at the heart of the impasse. Before the war, it carried a fifth of global oil and liquefied natural gas shipments. Iran has now declared a controlled maritime zone there, requiring authorisation for transit and potentially imposing fees. Washington has rejected that arrangement outright. Some tankers have begun crossing again, but the numbers remain a fraction of pre-war traffic.

Iran’s latest offer to the United States reportedly repeats terms previously rejected, including demands over the strait, sanctions relief, compensation, and American troop withdrawal. The gaps remain wide.

Pakistan’s role is neither guaranteed nor easy. But in the absence of direct dialogue, even a reliable messenger carries enormous weight.
