The government of Punjab has unveiled a strategy to transfer clinical departments in state-run hospitals to private organizations, marking a pivotal transition in healthcare administration. This initiative, part of a pioneering pilot project, is designed to enhance effectiveness and service provision within the public health sector across the province, promising a brighter future for healthcare in Punjab.
The pilot program, set to commence early, is expected to concentrate on hospitals in five districts, namely Bahawal Victoria Hospital, Dera Ghazi Khan Teaching Hospital, Sheikh Zayed Hospital in Rahim Yar Khan, Sahiwal Teaching Hospital, and Children’s Hospital in Faisalabad. The Punjab Health Department has commenced groundwork for the implementation of this endeavor, which will involve outsourcing crucial departments to private entities.
The targeted departments include the anesthesia department, responsible for administering anesthesia to patients, as well as emergency wards, blood transfusion services, children’s emergency, and kidney departments. By engaging private sector management to oversee these vital services, the Punjab government aims to enrich the standard of care and streamline operations within these medical facilities.

Sources indicate that the decision to externalize these services is motivated by the belief that private institutions can offer specialized expertise and operational efficiency. The success of this test project will determine the potential expansion of this approach to other government hospitals in the future. The Punjab Health Department, with its meticulous monitoring and comprehensive assessment process, aims to ensure the success and viability of this initiative, providing reassurance to the public.
