Unauthorised diggers die in Congo mine collapse

Tragedy struck over the weekend as a diamond mine collapsed in the Democratic Republic of Congo, claiming the lives of six people, according to officials on Sunday.

The incident occurred in the Diboko region of the central Kasai province on Friday. Reports suggest that the deceased were “unauthorized diggers who trespassed an off-limits mining area,” as stated by Gaston Nkole, the vice-governor of the province.

Despite the ban on mining in the area, informal miners continue to come to the site in search of diamonds, putting their lives at risk.

The vice-governor disclosed that six people were killed in the collapse, adding that an investigation is currently underway.

It’s not the first time such a tragedy has occurred in the DRC, where thousands of under-equipped miners explore for diamonds, gold, and other precious minerals, exposing themselves to the hazards of mining.
