What is kitchen gardening?

A kitchen garden is a small-scale garden usually located near or within a home. It is specifically designed for growing herbs, vegetables, and sometimes fruits that are commonly used in cooking. A kitchen garden provides you with fresh vegetables—and will look good doing it, too!

What are forms of kitchen gardening?

There are different forms of kitchen gardening depending on the space, layout, and style of the garden. Some common forms are:

Traditional row garden:

This is a simple and practical form of kitchen gardening where vegetables are planted in straight rows with paths between them. This makes it easy to weed, water, and harvest the crops. However, this form may not be very attractive or efficient in terms of space and water use.

Potager garden:

This is a more casual, informal, and artistic form of kitchen gardening that originated in France. It intermixes vegetables, fruit, herbs, and flowers in a pleasing arrangement that works with nature. It also incorporates companion planting, crop rotation, and organic methods to enhance the health and productivity of the garden. A potager garden can be designed in various shapes and sizes according to the available space and personal preference.

Raised bed garden:

This is a form of kitchen gardening where vegetables are grown in raised boxes or containers filled with soil and compost. This makes it easier to control the soil quality, drainage, and pests. It also reduces the need for bending and kneeling while working in the garden. Raised beds can be arranged in various patterns and heights to create an attractive and functional garden.

Vertical garden:

This is a form of kitchen gardening where vegetables are grown on vertical structures such as trellises, fences, walls, or towers. This makes use of the vertical space and allows more plants to be grown in a small area. It also adds visual interest and beauty to the garden. Vertical gardens can be used to grow climbing plants such as beans, peas, cucumbers, tomatoes, or flowers.

Container garden:

This is a form of kitchen gardening where vegetables are grown in pots, buckets, baskets, or other containers that can be moved around. This makes it possible to grow plants in places where there is no soil or space for a regular garden, such as balconies, patios, rooftops, or windowsills. It also allows more flexibility and creativity in arranging the plants. Container gardens can be used to grow almost any type of vegetable that does not need too much space or root depth.
