The steelpan, also referred to as a pan, steel drum, or as part of a steelband or steel orchestra when played with other musicians, is a musical instrument that originated in Trinidad and Tobago. It is typically played using a pair of straight sticks with rubber tips, although the specific size and type of rubber tip vary depending on the class of pan being played. Some musicians even use four pansticks, holding two in each hand. This instrument grew out of Trinidad and Tobago’s early 20th-century Carnival percussion groups.

In recognition of the steelpan’s role in promoting inclusive societies, sustainable communities, and the creative economy, as well as its potential positive impact on mental health and well-being, gender equality, and youth empowerment, the General Assembly has designated the 11th of August as World Steelpan Day. This day is a call to action, engaging us all in a global movement.
The General Assembly has called upon stakeholders to commemorate World Steelpan Day by organizing various activities geared towards increasing awareness about the cultural and historical importance of the steelpan and its connections to sustainable development. These activities could include music performances, cultural exhibitions, educational workshops, and community outreach programs. This includes highlighting its significance in various sectors such as tourism, culture, education, as well as its potential impact in science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics.
