In a historic move, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin on accusations of unlawfully deporting Ukrainian children, which US President Joe Biden called “justified.”
Speaking to reporters at the White House, Biden stated that the ICC’s action “makes a very strong point,” while noting that the United States is not a member of the court.
In addition to the warrant for Putin’s arrest, the ICC also issued a similar warrant for Maria Lvova-Belova, Russia’s presidential commissioner for children’s rights.
Despite Moscow dismissing the orders as “void,” the announcement was welcomed by war-battered Ukraine, with President Volodymyr Zelensky hailing it as a historic decision.
While Russia is not a party to the ICC, the court’s action sends a powerful message about the importance of international justice and accountability.
