Chinese President Xi Jinping wrapped up his visit to Russia on Wednesday after a grand show of solidarity with President Vladimir Putin against the West. The two autocrats pledged to work together to shape a new world order, as Xi bid farewell to Putin saying, “When we are together, we drive these changes.”
During his two-day visit, Xi barely touched on the Ukraine conflict and instead maintained an “impartial position.” Though Xi’s efforts to play the role of peacemaker didn’t yield any results, he didn’t offer direct support for Putin’s war in Ukraine either.
As Xi left Moscow, he told Putin to take care of himself, adding that the world is undergoing changes that haven’t happened in 100 years. Putin responded with, “I agree.”
The White House criticized China’s position, claiming it was not impartial and urged Beijing to pressure Russia to withdraw from Ukraine’s sovereign territory. The conflict is the biggest in Europe since World War Two.
During Xi’s visit, Russia launched a “massive air strike,” firing 21 Shahed-136 drones, according to the General Staff of Ukraine’s Armed Forces.
