An analysis on present political & constitutional crises

EDITORIAL:

Bismarck famously said, “Politics is the art of the possible, the attainable — the art of the next best.”The present round of discussions and negotiations between PTI and PDM prove once again that politics is the art of possibility. If PTI and PDM had negotiated earlier, political bargaining would have been much better.Politics is the art of the possible, and Pakistani politicians should know that negotiating among themselves is far more workable than involving non-democratic forces.

It is also critical for democracy in Pakistan that political decisions are controlled by politicians. Therefore, it is significant to uphold the law, constitution, and democratic values in the negotiations. If our politicians understand the worth of democratic engagement on principles, it would only strengthen democracy. Furthermore, the negotiations must be target-oriented rather than deceiving one another. If warring armies can negotiate, why can’t Pakistani politicians?

This also proves the point that politicians must not disengage and shut the doors of negotiations. Politics is always negotiable, even by upholding principles. It is encouraging to see PDM and PTI sitting together to carve out a plan forward. One can hope for a meaningful engagement and constructive negotiations to conduct free and transparent elections. Then, obeying the constitutional limit of holding 90 days is critical.

One of the solutions can be that elections of the Punjab Assembly are held on May 14, and the succeeding government may dissolve the Punjab Assembly in the coming months to hold the elections on the same day. It might be expensive, but upholding the constitution is critical. After the elections of the National and Provincial assemblies, there may be a constitutional amendment to hold all elections on the same day, including those of local government. It might settle the issue once and for all. It is more suitable for Pakistani democracy that elections are held on the same day. This political settlement might be translated into a constitutional amendment. Lastly, politics is the art of possibility, and negotiations are the only way forward.
