Blood pressure is the force of blood pushing against the walls of arteries as it flows through them. Systolic pressure represents the force of blood against the artery walls when the heart beats and pumps blood, while diastolic pressure represents the force of blood against the artery walls when the heart is at rest between beats. Blood pressure is an essential indicator of cardiovascular health, and high blood pressure (hypertension) can increase the risk of heart attack, stroke, and other health problems.
There is no cure for high blood pressure (hypertension), but it can be managed and controlled through lifestyle changes and medication. Here are some ways to help manage and control blood pressure:
- Adopt a healthy lifestyle: Eat a healthy diet that is low in sodium and high in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Limit alcohol consumption and quit smoking. Get regular physical activity, at least 30 minutes a day, most days of the week.

- Monitor your blood pressure: Regularly check your blood pressure at home, and keep a record of your readings. This can help you and your doctor monitor your blood pressure and make any necessary adjustments to your treatment plan.
- Take medication as prescribed: If lifestyle changes alone are not enough to control your blood pressure, your doctor may prescribe medication to help lower it. Take your medication exactly as prescribed and follow up regularly with your doctor to monitor your progress.
